Fire Safety Education

Mission

The Mississippi Legislature created Fire Safety Education within the State Fire Marshal’s Office in 2004 to reduce fire deaths in the state by developing and implementing a Fire Safety Education Program using nationally recognized standards.

Angela Brown Fire Safety Education Officer

Angela Brown joined the Mississippi Fire Marshal’s Office in April 2023 as a Fire Safety Education Officer. Prior to joining the Fire Marshal’s Office, she worked in Human Resource Management for 15 years. Angela volunteers with North Forrest VFD and has served as Public Education Officer for Forrest County Fire Services since 2009. She is a certified volunteer firefighter and a member of the Mississippi Association of Public Fire Safety Educators.

Jessica Jeter Fire Safety Education Officer

Jessica Jeter joined the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office in August 2024 as a Fire Safety Education Officer. She brings a diverse and extensive background to her new role.

Jessica’s fire service experience includes roles such as Assistant County Fire Coordinator, Fire Chief of the Blue Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, Secretary for the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, and certified Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). She is a member of the Mississippi Association of Public Fire Safety Educators, Mississippi Fire Chiefs Association, and serves as the North Volunteer Representative on the Mississippi Firefighters Association Executive Board.

Guide to Fire Safety Education

The Guide to Fire Safety Education was developed by the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office to provide recommended fire safety education messages to ensure a consistent message is taught throughout the state. It is also meant to give helpful tips to the educator to ensure an effective presentation. Many of these tips are lessons learned to help you avoid the mistakes of educators before you. Those new to fire safety education as well as the seasoned fire safety educator will find this guide useful.

Burn Injury Report

As required by Miss. Code Ann. § 45-11-281, any hospital, as defined in Section 41-9-3, or any licensed facility, as defined in Section 41-23-39, that is initially responsible for the treatment of an individual for a burn injury shall notify the State Fire Marshal or his designee within twenty-four (24) hours by phone at 601-359-1061 or fax at 601-359-1076. For the purposes of this act, the term “burn injury” means a burn injury: which causes second- or third-degree burns to nine percent (9%) or more of the patient’s body; which causes injury to the upper respiratory tract or laryngeal edema caused by inhaling super-heated air; or which causes death. The term “burn injury” shall not include sunburns.

The following form is used to report any fire where an injury or death occurred. The form may be filled electronically or manually. To fill the form electronically, type in the information and print the form; the completed form cannot be saved. To complete the form manually, print the blank form and write in the information. Fire Department Funding

  • Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) – A program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), grants are awarded to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the public and fire service personnel from fire and related hazards. Three types of grants are available: Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S), and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER). This Website provides a description of the three types of grants available and offers resources to help fire departments prepare and submit grant requests.
  • FM Global – Offers financial support to fire departments and brigades, as well as national, state, regional, local and community organizations working to combat fire in a wide array of fire prevention, preparedness and control efforts, including pre-fire planning for commercial, industrial and institutional facilities; fire and arson prevention and investigation; and fire prevention education and training programs.

  • Buzzly Fire Safety – A fire safety program to teach preschool and elementary age children basic fire safety survival skills. Provides fire safety products and materials nationwide to fire departments for distribution to daycare centers, preschools, elementary schools, fire stations, and public libraries.
  • Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program – NFPA’s fire safety program for children ages 4-5. The lesson and song may be copied for non-commercial educational purposes. Other lessons to be posted. Full program available for purchase.
  • Mississippi Association of Public Fire Safety Educators – A statewide network of fire and life safety educators.
  • Remembering When – A fire and fall prevention program for older adults. Also available in Spanish and components translated in 18 other languages. Free copies available from the Fire Marshal’s Office.
  • Sound Off Program – Is a national program that is for Second and Third Graders and their families that has the objectives to
    1. Educate children and families about smoke alarms, including the sounds they make, the need for monthly testing, and their importance
    2. To connect families that do not have enough working smoke alarms in their homes with local firefighters
    3. To foster a community approach to fire safety by forging partnerships among students, families, educators, firefighters, and life safety educators.

    The Sound Off curriculum was developed by specialist at Young Minds Inspired and national fire safety experts. The program also provides FREE long-life smoke alarms to families in your area that need them. The local firefighters work with partners to install the free smoke alarms at no cost. This program is made possible through a grant tot he Michigan Public Health Institute from DHS/FEMA’s Grant Program Directorate and the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program-Fire Prevention and Safety Grants.

  • Fire Standard Compliant Cigarettes – Provides information about the Fire Standard Compliant Cigarette Program in Mississippi. Fire standard compliant cigarettes (FSCC) are designed to reduce the amount of time that a cigarette continues to burn when it is not actively being smoked. By reducing the amount of time the cigarette continues to burn it is less likely to ignite furniture or bedding material.
  • Kitchen Tips for Kids – Provides kitchen safety information for kids.
  • Sale of Novelty and Toylike Lighters Banned in Mississippi – Provides information about the legislation which prohibits the sale or distribution of novelty lighters within the State of Mississippi. The law went into effect on July 1, 2010.
