Commissioner of Insurance and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney presents a check for $70,000 to the Culkin Volunteer Fire Department in Warren County. This is the 784th grant provided under the Rural Fire Truck Acquisition Assistance Program. Since the program’s inception in 1995 the State of Mississippi has distributed just over $39 million to counties and municipalities to assist with the purchase of rural fire apparatus. The local jurisdictions have contributed over $126 million toward these purchases. Warren county has participated in 10 rounds of the program and received a total of $580,000.00 from the state. Their local share for these 10 rounds is $1,591,044.00. The recipient of this apparatus, Culkin Volunteer Fire Department, has responded to an average of 42 fires per year over the past five year. Of these fires, 17 per year have been structure fires. During the same five year period they have responded to an average of 60 medical/rescue calls and an average of 197 calls per year to other type incidents such as weather, haz-mat and false alarms.
