Tammy Peavy joined the Mississippi Fire Marshal’s Office in June 2007 as the Fire Safety Education Officer.
Prior to joining the Fire Marshal’s Office, she worked as the Public Education Officer for Hattiesburg Fire Department for
three years. She has volunteered with Tri-Community Fire Department since 1995, where she is a certified Volunteer Firefighter and
Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. There Tammy has served as secretary, treasurer, and board member and has assisted with the Fire Prevention programs.
She also serves as president of the Mississippi Association of Public Fire Safety Educators.

The Mississippi Legislature created Fire Safety Education within the State Fire Marshal's Office in 2004 to reduce
fire deaths in the state by developing and implementing a Fire Safety Education Program using nationally recognized standards.
Fire Safety Education Districts
There are two Fire Safety Education Districts in Mississippi, the North District and the South District. Click on the small map on the right to view a larger map in pdf format that shows the counties and responsible officer for each district.

Leigh Carole Mullins

Northern District
Leigh Carole Mullins joined the Mississippi State Fire Marshal's Office in February of 2010. She is a Fire Safety Education and Special Projects Officer. She is the Campus Fire Safety Coordinator for the State Fire Marshal's Office. Leigh Carole has a Bachelor's Degree in Educational Psychology from Mississippi State University. Before working for the State Fire Marshal's Office she worked in Mental Health and Fundraising.

State Fire Marshal's Office Free Smoke Alarm Program
The State Fire Marshal’s Office has received three federal grants to provide smoke alarms to residents throughout the state who own their home as well as smoke alarm alert devices for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. These alarms and alert devices are installed by fire departments, churches, and community organizations within their community.
If your fire department, church, or community organization would like to participate in this program, contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
If you are in need of a smoke alarm or alert device, contact your county fire coordinator or local fire department.
Guide to Fire Safety Education
The Guide to Fire Safety Education was developed by the Mississippi State Fire Marshal's Office to provide recommended fire safety education messages to ensure a consistent message is taught throughout the state. It is also meant to give helpful tips to the educator to ensure an effective presentation. Many of these tips are lessons learned to help you avoid the mistakes of educators before you. Those new to fire safety education as well as the seasoned fire safety educator will find this guide useful.

Burn Injury Report
As required by Mississippi Law, any hospital, as defined in Section 41-9-3, or any licensed facility, as defined in Section 41-23-39, that is initially responsible for the treatment of an individual for a burn injury shall notify the State Fire Marshal or his designee within twenty-four (24) hours by phone at 601-359-1061 or fax at 601-359-1076. For the purposes of this act, the term "burn injury" means a burn injury: which causes second- or third-degree burns to nine percent (9%) or more of the patient's body; which causes injury to the upper respiratory tract or laryngeal edema caused by inhaling super-heated air; or which causes death. The term "burn injury" shall not include sunburns.

The following form is used to report any fire
where an injury or death occurred. The form may be filled electronically or
manually. To fill the form electronically, type in the information and print
the form; the completed form cannot be saved. To complete the form manually,
print the blank form and write in the information. The completed form should

Fire Department Funding
- Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) - A program of the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), grants are awarded to fire
departments to enhance their ability to protect the public and fire
service personnel from fire and related hazards. Three types of grants
are available: Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), Fire Prevention
and Safety (FP&S), and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response
(SAFER). This Website provides a description of the three types of
grants available and offers resources to help fire departments prepare
and submit grant requests.

national, state, regional, local and community organizations working to
combat fire in a wide array of fire prevention, preparedness and control
efforts, including pre-fire planning for commercial, industrial and

A fire safety program to teach preschool and elementary age children basic fire safety survival skills.

- Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program - NFPA’s fire safety program for children ages 4-5. The lesson and song may be copied for non-commercial educational purposes. Other lessons to be posted. Full program available for purchase. Also available in Spanish.

- Risk Watch - NFPA’s comprehensive curriculum to teach how to recognize and avoid unintentional injuries. The Natural Disasters curriculum helps prevent injuries that can result from disasters and to initiate a level of comfort for children in any disaster. Includes a Kids Only page and information to the Safe Community Program. The Unintentional Injuries curriculum teaches children how to recognize and avoid unintentional injuries. - Fire Standard Compliant Cigarettes - Provides information about the Fire Standard Compliant Cigarette Program in Mississippi. Fire standard compliant cigarettes (FSCC) are designed to reduce the amount of time that a cigarette continues to burn when it is not actively being smoked. By reducing the amount of time the cigarette continues to burn it is less likely to ignite furniture or bedding material.
